Given the importance of right to personal information privacy, Pakistan plans to enhance and elaborate the means for the citizens to control use of their private information, rules to prevent unjustified breach of personal information privacy, and effective remedies to the ones whose privacy is breached.
Therefore, upper house (Senate) of the Parliament in Pakistan as of 13 February 2023 has on its docket the draft for a Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (PDPA’23), and this article provides a structured overview of the same.
PDPA’23 will enable the citizens of Pakistan to have more control over their personal data. It will make it easier to access, and improve the quality of information that Pakistanis get about what happens to their data once they decide to share it.
Further, PDPA’23 will also reinforce trust to help growth of businesses in Pakistan and allow Pakistani businesses to serve consumers throughout the world with adequate safeguards for personal data, and with lower costs.
