Here comes prom night – and with it, parental worry.

Teens and adults see prom as a “rite of passage,” which means kids think they have to make this night one to remember for the ages – which can lead to drinking and other risky behavior.

Not your teenager? Most parents like to think their kids will make good decisions – and they’re right, most teens will. But parents can sometimes be in the dark.

Laura Dean-Mooney of Mothers Against Drunk Driving tells TODAY that one in five teenagers binge drink, but only one in 100 parents think their child binge drinks.

So, how do you keep your teens safe during prom season, but still let them have fun? The experts recommend cracking down on the after-party. “No hotel rooms,” said psychologist Belisa Vranich. Ann Shoket, editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine, says parents should get their kids to come straight home after prom: “Make sure you are part of the fun.”

Hmmmm. Parents of teens, how are you handling the potential perils of prom night?
